Perhaps you are a college student (or their parent) who is looking for a way to assess your strengths, identify the best course of study, and choose a career that speaks to who you are. Or maybe you’ve always had a hard time with test-taking, comprehension, or maintaining focus. Now, you want to see if there are any accommodations your school or assessment administrator (i.e., College Board)  can provide to help you be more successful.

As a parent, seeing your child struggle is a painful and disempowering experience. You’re likely confused and frustrated to see them under-performing because you know they have the potential to succeed. Teachers or administrators may be misinterpreting your child’s behavior as defiant or disobedient when, in reality, they are dealing with a learning disability or something even greater. And if you are a student, you are probably feeling defeated, slowly losing confidence in your abilities and beginning to question your self-worth.

Thankfully, at Weston Family Psychology, our Neuroeducational Evaluations can offer you solutions and support for helping your child grow and succeed. Our comprehensive assessments have three main functions: 1) to create a profile of your child’s academic strengths and weaknesses, 2) to identify neurodevelopmental factors that may be negatively impacting their educational success, and 3) to develop intervention strategies for the parents, the student, and their school.

Neuroeducational Evaluations differ from standard psychoeducational testing in that they integrate traditional psychoeducational and neuropsychological components into the testing process with the goal of identifying any educational and/or neuropsychological factors that may adversely impact learning. A neuroeducational assessment integrates various neuropsychological tests to investigate which neurological skills are affecting the educational process. Hence, the evaluation links brain functioning and learning behavior, making it a more effective and comprehensive approach to understanding and mitigating the challenges specific to each individual.

Who Can A Neuroeducational Evaluation Help?

Most of our services are aimed at children, adolescents, and young college students who are struggling with educational success—however, we are happy to help anyone regardless of age. Though developmental assessments can be provided for children beginning at 18 months, most of our clients range from children just beginning kindergarten to students in graduate school.

We understand that people struggle in school for a multitude of reasons which is why our evaluations are both dynamic and thorough, assessing numerous components related to learning, cognition, and behavior. In addition to diagnostic purposes, the most essential part of our evaluations is our ability to provide you with specific recommendations, interventions, and strategies customized to help your child reach their full potential and achieve optimal success. These recommendations and the evaluation’s results are always provided through one-on-one feedback following the completion of testing.

How Does A Neuroeducational Evaluation Work?

If you are a parent or a college student, we’ll first meet to discuss the history and nature of the problem, looking at its impact emotionally, socially, and educationally. We’ll also have parents—and possibly teachers—fill out some questionnaires and rating scales, depending on the situation. Using the information gathered from our conversation and the questionnaires, we’ll tailor an evaluation specific to the questions you have and the presenting issues. Testing is typically conducted during a period of 2–4 days for 3–4 hours per day.  After the evaluation is completed and we have all the necessary data, we’ll conduct a feedback session to discuss results and provide you with a report you can deliver to the school or testing board.

In that report, you will find a description of your child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses, suggestions for how you can help them succeed, and knowledge of what to expect now and in the future. We can also offer you suggestions for improving behaviors, guidance for helping them succeed, and recommendations for specific school interventions and related programs. Additionally, we can assist in recommending specialized classroom settings, educational placements, and other accommodations, such as a 504, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), or extended time on standardized tests.

Intervention

In addition to evaluation services, we also provide reading and math intervention through Lindamood Bell programs, Seeing Stars for reading, On Cloud Nine for math, and Visualizing and Verbalizing for comprehension. These programs focus on helping individuals build and strengthen skills for improving reading and math proficiency. Individuals diagnosed with a reading disorder (such as dyslexia) or a math disorder can particularly benefit from these additional interventions, which can be administered by a trained specialist at your home, at school, or in our office 2–3 hours per week.
